# How the Render Network works

Understand how scenes, versions, render targets, jobs, frames, and outputs fit together.

Render Network uses a pool of rendering computers, called nodes, to render your scenes.

You can render the same uploaded scene more than once, with different frame ranges, quality settings, or outputs. Each submission creates a separate job.

    B --> C[Job]

    D --> E[Approved outputs]
```
## Scenes and versions
A scene is the uploaded file and its assets. Uploading a revised file through **Upload Snapshot** adds a [version](/docs/web-app/scenes-and-versions.md) to that scene. Existing jobs remain associated with the version they were created from.
Uploading a scene does not start a render. Once the scene is ready, you choose what to render in [Create a job](/docs/web-app/create-a-job.md).
## Targets and jobs
A render target defines the camera, geometry, lighting, and render settings used for a render. The equivalent in Cinema 4D is a take, and in Blender it is a scene. A file can contain several render targets. Each render target you select creates a separate job.
The job combines a scene version and target with your [render settings](/docs/web-app/render-settings.md), [outputs](/docs/web-app/outputs.md), and [network settings](/docs/web-app/render-tiers.md). Changing those settings for another render does not require uploading the file again.
## Frames, passes, and outputs
One frame can produce several files: for example, a Beauty image and separate lighting passes. The selected passes determine what is rendered; output configurations determine how those results are saved, such as PNG or EXR.
The previews you inspect in the app are separate from the final output files. [Frame approval](/docs/web-app/review-and-approve-frames.md) makes the rendered outputs available for [download](/docs/web-app/download-frames.md).
## Projects and progress
[Projects](/docs/web-app/projects.md) group related scenes and jobs. They are optional: **All Scenes** and **All Jobs** also give you access to your work.
A scene, a job, and its individual frames have their own statuses. A scene marked **Ready** can be used to create a job; it does not mean that its jobs have finished. Use [Activity](/docs/web-app/track-progress.md) to follow uploads, renders, and downloads.
## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.
Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:
```
GET https://know.rendernetwork.com/docs/get-started/concepts.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```
`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.
The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.
Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
